This 2-day course will provide students with theoretical and practical experience in identifying, retrieving, preserving and conserving information in an electronic record management environment. It explores record management in relation to the business needs of all types of organizations, whether in the public or private sector, embracing all records, but with a particular emphasis on electronic records.
OUTCOMES: After successful completion of this short course, the participants should be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts;
demonstrate an understanding of the common concerns that have to be addressed as far as electronic records are concerned;
demonstrate an understanding of the physical storage and handling of electronic records;
demonstrate an understanding of hard copy versus electronic records;
demonstrate an understanding of the legal matters involved and the international standards that should be adhered to;
demonstrate an understanding of the role of the records manager, the IT department and senior management in electronic records management;
demonstrate an understanding of the concept “document management” versus “records management”;
OUTCOMES (continued):
demonstrate an understanding of the way in which different types of electronic records should be managed;
demonstrate an understanding of how to work with metadata; and
Demonstrate an understanding of the manner in which products should be evaluated.
TARGET GROUP:
Officials of government departments and employees of private companies or organizations responsible for records management.
Minimum Entry Requirements: Please note that the minimum entry requirement for this course is Matric (Grade 12). Students attending this course will be required to provide certified copies of their Identity Document and Matric Certificate. The attendance of a Records Management NQF 5 level short course is also required.

Assessment:
Students will have to prove their competence in applying the knowledge, skills and behaviour learnt during class exercises and group work. Each student must submit an assignment within a specific time-frame. (It is your responsibility to keep a hard copy and/or electronic copy of your assignment as back-up. LeMark/NWU will not make or keep any copies of your assignment, nor can we accept any responsibility for the loss thereof).
Assignment Assessment Guide/Template:
Each student will receive a hard copy as well as an electronic copy of an Assignment Assessment Guide/Template. This guide will lead you step by step through the assessment process, some important terms as well as what you are required to submit in order to be assessed for this course/programme.
Certification:
Successful students will receive a certificate of competence accredited by the Potchefstroom Business School (PBS), North West University (Potchefstroom Campus). Students who are found not yet competent will be allowed to hand in one re-submission. (Terms & Conditions Apply). Alternatively, learners will receive a LeMark Letter of Attendance
Re-submissions:
When a student is granted a re-submission they will have 36 days (weekends & holidays included) to complete their PoE/Assignment. Should they not meet this deadline, they will have to book, pay and attend the programme/course at their own expense. Should they yet again be found to be Not Yet Competent (NYC) – the policy prescribes that the student will have to re-register for the course.

About our Academic Manager/Facilitator: Isabel Schellnack-Kelly:
BA(Hons) (Natal University, Pietermaritzburg), MA (UNISA), National Diploma in Archival Science (TSA)
Spent over ten years in the Records Management Division of the National Archives of South Africa, oversaw the compilation and amendment to record keeping systems, including file plans, for governmental bodies; involved in appraisal projects and formulation of disposal authorities; formulated and adapted records management policies; and provided formal training to Records Managers and Archivists of governmental bodies and international visitors.
Since December 2002 been a records management consultant providing records management and related archival services to the public and private sector. These services involve the compilation of recordkeeping systems, compilation and implementation of records management policies and procedures, compiled training manuals in various aspects of records management matters, and provided on-site training courses and workshops concerning records management for organizations such as Document Warehouse, Knowledge Upgrade Management, Lemark and Unisa.
Projects have included national and international private companies, governmental bodies and parastatals such as Anglo American Technical Division; Department of Public Enterprises; Competition Commission; Johannesburg Roads Agency; Eastern Cape: Department of Housing, Local Government and Traditional Affairs; Trade and Investment South Africa; Department of Justice; Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature; Uganda\\\\\\\'s National Social Security Fund (NSSF); South African History Archive; South African Human Rights Commission, Agricultural Research Council and its institutes; and South African Broadcasting Association.

Currently registered for D Litt in Information Science with Unisa’s Information Science Department with a thesis entitled: The role of records management in alleviating poverty in South Africa.
